En esta ocasión la prensa mexicana no tuvo piedad con su equipo y se valió del juego de palabras para recriminar la histórica derrota. El diario deportivo Récord tituló Tridículo tras el juego desangelado de los mexicanos e hicieron un llamamiento de atención a la Federación Mexicana de Fútbol. El periódico El Universal le dedicó parte de su portada con Tri-turados. La Prensa, periódico de nota roja, no perdió la oportunidad para señalar que la derrota fue una “masacre”.

“Es una selección excesivamente cobijada, solapada. En la que el aficionado le permite las malas actuaciones. Es un equipo aburguesado. Ellos condicionan su permanencia en la selección nacional. Al equipo le falta disciplina”, expresó el reportero Carlos Guerrero. David Faitelson, periodista deportivo de ESPN, habló del “fútbol mexicano y su deuda eterna: su nivel y sus resultados de cancha desmerecen y casi insultan a la gran pasión y entrega del aficionado”.

La noche en Santa Clara, California ha dejado abierta una herida profunda entre los hinchas del fútbol mexicano. En redes sociales comenzó una avalancha de memes en contra del entrenador y jugadores. La risa sirvió como el catalizador de su decepción. En Twitter se hizo tendencia el hashtag "#FueraOsorio" para culpar al seleccionador. En esta ocasión el presidente mexicano, Enrique Peña Nieto, prefirió reservarse las palabras de aliento. El festejo tendrá que esperar un par de años más.
